Day 10 Home 22/7/22

Image
Murgon has had 81mm of rain in the past 24 hrs. Everything is muddy and we're going to head home. Blazeaid has been cancelled today and probably tomorrow. Some farms haven't dried out since the first flood this year in January. Apparently the area has been flooded 4 times this year. Today we travelled 192kms.  It rained almost the whole way home. Total travelled hitched for this trip is 389kms.

Day 9 Blazeaid 21/7/22

This morning looks a bit bleak, not sure how much work we'll get done today. Our work place for the day in Mondure. Today we, a team of 5, cleared debris from a 300m fence line. There was 4 strands of barbed wire in various states of repair, some buried VERY deep under the soggy, muddy mess washed down in the various floods this year. It was extremely hard going in places. We had a couple of showers to contend with during the morning and at lunchtime when it got a little heavier we called it a day. It rained on and off all afternoon and this evening it is quite heavy.  We plan to head home tomorrow.

Day 8 Blazeaid 20/7/22

With sore muscles we forgot we had it's back out to the paddocks we go. Wet weather predicted.  A few pics of our 'job' today. We drove out to the old Murgon-Gayndah road and did some fencing with farmer Dan. Mark and Mick straining wire to a tree. We finished this fence which another crew had started,  3 strands of barbed wire, and put up a new long fence with 4 strands of barb. It was cold and wet on and off today but we persevered and farmer Dan was very happy with the days work. Fence post holes being done the easy way. We got wet with this one and just as we packed up the sun came out so we got the tools back out and put another post in. Double gates going in. These tractors made it easier.  The boys happy with the finished gates. We put another large single gate in as well. I've got very tired 'squat muscles' from twitching the wire to the bottom of the posts. We both have tired back and shoulder muscles but we've had a great day and will be going bac...

Day 7 Blazeaid, 19/7/22

A very fresh start to the day, 3.2° feels like 1.7° according to the BoM. Pretty sky to see us off to volunteer.  We drove 45kms, out towards Gayndah, to a farm. The farmers keep getting interrupted with rain and are struggling to clean up from January's floods. Their is more rain predicted in the next couple of days and they're trying to get seeds planted before it gets here. Our first job was to sort through the above and many more piles of pipes and take out the bent ones and remove the fittings. Not an easy task. Some had to be removed with a grinder. The horse gave us encouragement.  Our 2nd job was to go out into the soggy paddocks and remove any rubbish and stack up any trees washed down. We made about 5 bonfire piles.  The farm hand got his ute bogged. Great views. We are pretty tired after our day. I've been asked to help in the kitchen, serving dinner and the clean up as 1 of the regular ladies has to take a few hours off.

Day 6. Murgon Blazeaid, 18/7/221

Image
Not so cold this morning.  Narelle and Dennis, friends from Hervey Bay, are here. The King parrots paid them a visit while we were there saying goodbye.  Murgon showgrounds,  set up ready for some volunteering.  Took a walk into town because we could. Street art. We had a restful afternoon then a delicious dinner with the blazeaid crew. I put myself to work and helped with the kitchen clean up.  It was a much warmer day and we managed to shed a few layers of clothing. Today we travelled 13kms, taking our total hitched to 197kms.

Day 5 B.P Dam 17/7/22

Image
Not quite as cold this morning, a balmy 2°. Foggy morning tea walk across the dam, 4.6kms. Rocko on guard duty. Our new satellite spotting chairs are very comfortable. Rocko is hiding under his blanket from the cold.

Day 4 B.P Dam 16.7.22

Image
A very chilly, -03°, on my short walk this morning. Only managed 1.2kms. Took Rocko for a walk while the boys rode in to Murgon. Sun was shining and the temperature was much more pleasant. The boys rode 31km and I walked 8. Dinner  cooking on the fire. Roast pork dinner for 3. A very generous neighbour gifted us 6 large pieces of wood.

Day 3 B.P Dam 15/7/22

Popped into Murgon to see Spud the blazeaid camp coordinator. We're good to arrive in camp Monday for a couple of days volunteering.  Walked around Murgon Creek. Relaxing afternoon doing puzzles and riding around the van park. A chilly evening sitting by the fire. Managed to spot 1 satellite, too much ambient light.
